As the sun shines down, you grab your hat, sunglasses and towel, ready to soak up the rays. But wait! Have you applied any sunscreen to your skin? Here are some tips to protect your delicate skin from the sun's harmful rays.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I APPLY SUNSCREEN?

Come rain or shine sun care should be a regular part of your daily skincare routine. Make sure to apply sunscreen on the exposed parts of your body daily whether you are at the beach, on the road or in the office. Sunscreen is a powerful skin-saving product that forms a protective barrier against the sun helping to prevent sunburns, premature aging, uneven skin tone and reduce the risk of developing skin cancer.

WHAT SPF FACTOR SHOULD I USE?

Make sure your sunscreen has an SPF of no less than 30 which blocks out at least 97% of UVB rays. If you spend most of your time in the sun daily you will need a higher SPF. UVA rays cause visible signs of aging while UVB rays are responsible for sunburnt skin. So you can opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen which protects against UVA and UVB rays.

HOW MUCH SUNSCREEN DO I NEED?

You should apply at least two fingers’ worth (use your index and pointer fingers) to your face, hairline, ears and neck. Apply your sunscreen about 30 minutes before heading out, as the last step of your skincare routine, to give it time to fully absorb into your skin. If you go swimming or sweat easily then reapply every two hours. Your lips can also get sunburnt so make sure to use a UV-protective lip balm.

WHAT FORMULA IS BEST FOR MY SKIN TYPE?

Acne-prone skin & oily skin: Choose an oil-free sunscreen that will dry quickly and absorb any excess sebum.

Dry & sensitive skin:  Choose a lightweight sunscreen with a water-like texture that will soothe sensitive skin like a mineral-based sunscreen. Sunscreens with hydrating and skin barrier repairing ingredients like ceramides are ideal for dry skin.

CAN I RE-USE LAST YEAR’S SUNSCREEN?

Sunscreen loses its effectiveness over time and shouldn't be used for longer than one year.  Discard and replace any sunscreen if it has passed its expiry date, has a different texture, odour or colour from when you first opened it.

IF I GET SUNBURNT IS THERE ANY TREATMENT I CAN USE AFTER SUN EXPOSURE?

After spending time in the sun your skin may feel hot, flushed and perhaps sunburnt. After-sun treatments like cooling gels, lotions and sprays will provide relief to your skin and allow it to cool off and recover. Make sure to also drink plenty of water to rehydrate your skin and body.

HOW DO I PROTECT MY KIDS FROM SUN DAMAGE?

Babies and toddlers need extra sun protection as their skin is thinner and more sensitive than adult’s skin. However it is recommended that babies only start using sun care from 6 months and should completely avoid exposure to direct sunlight until then. Sunscreens for kids have fewer ingredients, therefore have less risk of causing irritations.

WHAT CAN I DO TO PROTECT MY SKIN BEYOND SUNSCREEN?

UV rays are the strongest and most harmful from 10 am to 2pm so take cover indoors or wear protective gear like a wide-brimmed hat and UV protective sunglasses. If you can’t avoid the sun during these hours, make sure you apply a double coat of sunscreen and re-apply every two hours.

HOW CAN I TAN SAFELY?

Self-tanning products like spray tans, oils and lotions offer the beautiful golden glow that many people seek without the risk of damage from UV exposure. However you still need to apply sunscreen so opt for an oil-free sunscreen to prevent your self-tan from fading faster. If you would like a safe and professional spray tan Dis-Chem’s Skin Strategy Beauty Salons (available in selected stores) offer spray tanning.
