What should your cholesterol levels be?

If poorly managed or untreated, high cholesterol can cause plaque to build up in your arteries. Plaque is the deposit of excessive cholesterol in the walls of blood vessels. Over time, this plaque can cause a narrowing of your arteries.

After being diagnosed with high cholesterol, some people only need to make lifestyle changes and do not require medication to control their cholesterol. Some people will need to start medication sooner.

If you have high cholesterol levels in your blood, it can increase your risk for complications.
