Somewhere near Amanzimtoti KwaZulu Natal, is a house of safety dedicated to helping children who have been abused; abused physically, abused emotionally, abused and broken down as no child should ever be subjected to.
Thankfully there are these houses of safety for these children and even more so, thankfully there are volunteers such as Kerry Henriques who spend time and effort assisting the homes and helping heal the children placed in their care.
During December 2009, Kerry invited Candace Siederer (KZN Regional Cosmetics Manager) and Helma Adams, Cosmetic Manager at Dis-Chem Amanzimtoti, to visit one of the homes who were hosting a small Christmas party for the children.
Dis-Chem Amanzimtoti recently opened its doors in the new Galleria shopping centre. The company is committed to each store working within their communities and so, with gifts in hand, Candace and Helma accepted the invitation.
Candace says, “We arrived at the home on Tuesday afternoon to find Kerry had laid tables with party goodies. There was also a jumping castle in the garden and the children were so excited when we gave them presents from Dis-Chem.”
“Going to this home, “ she adds, “put so much into perspective for Helma and myself. It made us realize just how fragile these children are.”
Above: To protect their identity, Candace and Helma asked the children to cover
their faces with their goodie bags. Of course, one little fellow just couldn’t resist
sneaking a peek at the photographer!
